Today…..I choose to Smile!

A wise man used to tell me at least once a day “A man’s got choices.” Lets take care of the obvious first. I don’t think it had anything to do with men versus women, or races, or religions or anything else that separates us. His statement was Universal. Everybody has the opportunity to make their own choices everyday. We have all kinds of reasons for why we are not in control of our choices and I am not even going to touch that right now but most people will agree that you have some control over your choices. All I am saying is that no matter what kind of day you are having you get to decide how to handle it. And today…….I choose to Smile!

If I am sad. Now, what kind of sad I am talking about can be a wide range. There is sad because my butt doesn’t look it’s best in these pants and I didn’t figure it out until I was way out of the house kind of sad. Or, somebody just died kind of sad. They are both legitimate and none of us should have to explain our level of pain. And it would be extremely understandable to find people who were sad like me because they would understand me and not make me feel bad. But today……..I would like to find some smiling faces.

If I am mad. There are all kinds of mad that can come with different levels reprecussions. There is the level 2 mad where you are subject to go home and have an extra brownie and possibly cry a liitle bit while you are in the shower. Level 8 mad might quit your job and wreck the car on the way home and get a DWI. A nine or ten can get you prison time. No judgment. But wherever I am on the meter it would help not having to explain myself if I hang with other people on that same meter. Or……..I can suck it up and find some smiling faces.

If I am as Happy as I have ever been. I’m talking about the kind of happy where you look at everybody else like they need to get their crap together. Happy where you don’t want to be around anything not happy because it is beneath you. The kind of Happy where you get pissed because you are in the company of some other people who actually think that their Happy day was better than yours. The nerve. Why would I want to waste this Happy vibe with negative people? Not a chance. I definitely choose smiling faces.

I am just saying that no matter where you are in your day or life, don’t waste it in the company of people that will make it worse. You have a choice. Scan the room. Find the happy people. Think about how the conversation is going to go before you dial the number. If you don’t see a funny or introspective talk happening then just don’t make the call. If you have something clever to say but every time you try that with this person it goes bad…………. Let it go. Say hello and keep it going until you can find somebody who likes your funny story. Then again, how do you know when your smile is what somebody else needed for the day. I know. I just messed up the whole point. Today…….I choose to Smile!!
