Get Over It!

Get Over It! Have those words ever actually worked? Have those words ever made somebody feel better? Has that phrase made a bad situation good before? Has anybody ever said “Thank you” after somebody told them to “Get Over It?” Okay, so the picture can be a little misleading. I could be talking about women or possibly black people. Both groups have been told to “Get Over It” before and would have a real argument. However, I just liked the picture. To be elegant with your head held high in the face of a mob that doesn’t care about you and tells you to get on with your life. It never feels good to be put in that predicament but you have to admire those who can ignore that kind of thinking.

First of all, I hate to tell you this but you really do need to get over it. I know. I know. That was horrible but it is real. A negative moment is right around the corner. A jerk is getting ready to strike up a conversation with you. Someone you love is going to hurt you deeply. A pet is going to die. Your job is going to go belly up. A person on their cell phone is going to run into the back of the car you just paid off. You are going to get a sharp pain in your right calf muscle for no reason and it won’t go away. However, the bills are still due. They still expect you to come to work tomorrow. Your kids are still hungry. The grass still needs to be cut. You are ready to buy a new house. Your extended family needs you. So, what do you do? You Get Over It! I apologize but that really is the answer. Otherwise, whatever is bad will get worse. I guarantee it. Tomorrow will be worse that today. Only people who Really love you honestly even cares about your problems. The only real answer is to Get Over It! So, what are we talking about?

I’m saying that we are human. Telling somebody to get over it just doesn’t help in the moment. There is nothing wrong with taking a moment to admit that a task is daunting. There is nothing wrong with saying that right now you are overwhelmed. No shame in saying that you have no idea how you will make it through this. It is perfectly fine to need help. It takes a strong person to say that they messed up and need to re-group. You will not make me feel bad for being down. It is my right. And even though I have to get up…….it can only happen in my time. It is so dismissive and short-sighted to tell someone to get over it. Even if you went through something similar you still don’t know. It is unreasonable to ask a human being to ignore their emotions. It is just naive.

So, what do we do? I like to ask people what the plan is and if they don’t have one I can help with that. Sometimes all people want to do is vent. You can say things to keep the conversation going but your responsibility level is low. Some people just want to be told that they aren’t crazy. Most of the time, silence is golden. We all feel the need to talk and we actually think that even though we have major problems in our own lives that we can fix everybody else. Leave your agenda at home and just be there for people sometimes. And on the flip side, understand that a person who tells you to “Get Over It” probably doesn’t posses the verbage to help you anyway. Yes, I know that at the end of the day I need to Get Over It but guess what? I’ll Get Over It when I feel like it.
