Vacation 101! Let Me School Ya’ll.

I just got back from a little vacation. Nothing too spectacular. Not too expensive. It wouldn’t be on the list of Amazing vacation spots but not bad either. I have to say that I enjoyed myself and while back in the comfort of my own home and getting the chance to decompress I have come to a conclusion that I didn’t see coming but is real. I am really good at this excercise. I am an excellent vacationer. I don’t know where that fits in if you are comparing it to a travel agent but I think I should get paid for my talent. I can tell you what kind of vacation you are going to have from a series of five to ten questions. I can then give you a personal vacation planning breakdown that guarantees success or failure for your trip. My system even covers vacation planning for people of all economic situations. I haven’t decided how much I should charge for this service but I will definitely put a .99 on the end. That seems to work.

First of course, is money. You have to be real with yourself about how much money you can afford to spend on this venture and what are your priorities. Is this a “big-baller” kind of trip where you are willing to work extra leading up to it and know that you will see the effects of the fun you had on your credit card bill for a long time afterwards? Or, is this a budget-friendly “we need to just get away for a minute” kind of outing? Most people will tell you that this is the most important part of your vacation planning. Not me! It is important but not #1.

Is this a hard work/relaxation/ or an educational trip? Huge Question! The person who needs to get away and relax doesn’t need to go mountain climbing. The big family on their summer vacation before the kids go back to school probably won’t be best suited at a luxury remote resort with nude beaches away from city life. The “Type-A” couple who like to do Iron-Man Competitions together probaby don’t want to sit on a cruise ship drinking and watching the world go by. Be honest about what kind a vacation you are wanting to do “this time.” It changes. It depends on what you are wanting to accomplish at this point in your life. They are all good ideas but only at the time that they are good ideas. However, as important as this seems it still is a long way away from the true “Secret To Successful Vacationing.”

Drum Roll please…………………..After many many years of vacationing of all kinds. I mean 5-star hotels as well as sleeping in a garmet bag on my boys dorm room floor. Fine dining as well as a pork chop sandwich, an apple, a pack of cheese crackers and a warm milk in a paper bag. I have travelled with very affluent business people where everything was paid for with a corporate card as well as being cramped in a minivan with a whole bunch of cheap family members. I have done the homework. I have gone the extra mile for you so that you don’t have to. And the main thing that needs to be dealt with if you want that Perfect Vacation is………………You! Are you a jerk? Are you in a bad place? Do you get along well with others? Are you drama almost everywhere you go? Are you closed-minded about trying stuff? Are you the “I don’t like that” guy? If things don’t go perfectly according to plan are you going to lose your head? Okay, let’s try another one. Your team! Are the people who are going on this trip cool? Or, are you cool with them? Are you going with family who makes you feel good and you guys end up laughing no matter where you go? Are you getting away with that group of friends who sometimes you guys just sit up and laugh until all hours of the night? Are you taking a trip with that small set of co-workers that you have fun at work with but can’t wait to spend time with outside the office? Will you be sharing a room with that person who you enjoy doing “Anything” with? My point is that if you are basically an A-hole then you have killed half of your vacation right there. And if you are an A-hole there is a high probability that your team sucks. You probably don’t spend a lot of time with Amazing and fun people and they probably don’t vacation with you. On the other hand………If you have worked on yourself and appreciate positive interation with good people and learning from the tests that live gives you everyday and find joy in the simple things in life then your vacation is looking pretty good. Actually, you don’t even need to go on vacation. Just Live! Just Love! Just Enjoy! Sitting on the porch with a glass of water speaking to your neighbors as they go by before dinner is called what?………………….A Mini-Vacation! If your mind is right!
